So said Samwise Gamgee at the end of 'The Lord of the Rings' (yes, I'm a LOTR nerd!).
That seems an appropriate first new blog title.
I fully enjoyed the opportunity in 2016 to raise issues for the Waimairi ward in the local body elections. I believe that it's the duty of every citizen to care for the needs of our community: especially our most vulnerable. I worked hard to raise concerns, and bring forward ideas to make Christchurch a better city.
That belief was at the forefront of my thinking when I was asked to stand for Labour in this year's general election.
New Zealand is an amazing place. I am privileged to live in the most beautiful country in the world. We have so much going for us. Unmatched scenery, a wonderful climate, dedicated and skilled people, and - most important of all - a belief that we all benefit when we all benefit.
It's that point that has me standing. Here's that I believe will benefit us all.
New Zealand needs affordable housing. Labour has a plan for that.
New Zealand needs available healthcare - especially in mental health. labour has a plan for that.
New Zealand needs accessible education for all. Labour has a plan for that.
New Zealand needs quality jobs. labour has a plan for that.
So: I'm back. I'm looking forward to promoting these ideas, and what they mean for the people of Ilam. I'm looking forward to debating those ideas across the political spectrum. I'm looking forward to showing what a local MP who is actually present in the community looks like.
It's going to be a busy year, on an important ride. Come and join me.
